She turned her back on the intercom and ran.

Her throat sore with the screaming, the recriminations, her eyes burning with the acid sorrow of the mistake she'd made, the mistake that wasn't hers to make, Bella ran, stumbling over cracks in the hall, pebbles, bits of nothing, her own two feet. Edgeworth had been right after all, in his insufferable, insensitive, honest way. Nagi had had the right to know, to light the darkness of his madness with rays of truth and now, oh, now his fury was abrahamic in its scope and Bella could not gainsay it, could not say Nagi was wrong to be angry.

He was right to be furious, right to rage for his wife and son lost, for the cruel trick played on him, the trick Bella had gone along with because she could not bear to hear Nagi's pain. Raw and wrought and taut, a thousand times worse than she could have imagined, it drove her now to the room she remembered weeping in, rocking a doll with a speaker in it and pretending it was Nagi's.

Pretending it was her own.

Bella's stomach roiled, her stomach and the baby she imagined was inside it, knowing that she had failed. She had failed to have the strength to tell the truth, and now Nagi would take his grief and loss out on everyone he could. Like Victoria, for the loss of James -- and it was Bella's fault, her fault. Her fault, her fault. And she had to make it right.

"Nagi!" she shouted, her hoarse voice breaking, cracking, as she skidded to a halt, half-falling against the wall, balancing herself at the last moment with her palms splayed flat against the door of Nagi's cell. She pounded on it with her fists. "Nagi! I'm here!" She fumbled at the door with shaking, sweating hands.
