Before going to see Naruto, Sasuke had washed his hands.
He'd turned the water on as hot as it would go, and could almost feel the skin peeling from his fingers as he thrust them into the steam, rinsing off the blood and then some--until his knuckles were cracked and blistered, raw and angry red. It had hurt, it had been agony, but--he couldn't bear the thought of appearing before Naruto dressed in the blood of the man that had essentially been the starting point for what ended up being a crucible for both of them.
Feeling somewhat ill, he recalled the things Orochimaru had said, and even as he walked toward the rec area he could hear the snake's voice bouncing through the hollow space of the hallway--
not even if you possessed the ability to love or be loved
Shaking his head, he sucked in a breath, the musty air expanding his lungs as he slumped down, waiting in place for Naruto to arrive. Whatever Naruto had to tell him, it had been for his ears only, and it had to have been something serious--else the other boy would have just yelled it over the intercom. It was an unusual situation indeed, and--Sasuke had to prepare himself for the worst. That seemed to be the case quite often these days.
