GHOST TRICK: A+
Try it out if you have a DS! So worth it!
I just finished the game! In fact, I stayed up till 6 in the morning playing it because I couldn't put it down. This is a lot, coming from me, because I almost make a point to never sacrifice sleep for anything.
In any case, a quick doodle and some thoughts. Major spoilers for the end of the game!
I'm saying this as a huge Phoenix Wright fan, but objectively, I think Ghost Trick is a better game. Gameplay-wise. It's better balanced with timed elements as well as tricky elements, and it never leaves you stranded and clueless the way PW sometimes does in investigation parts. And I wouldn't say the story is realistic, but as it's one long, coherent plot (without sequels and prequels getting in the way... yet), there are less holes in the logic.
I think the characters are great too! And if this game doesn't get as popular as PW... well, to be honest, the only reason (I think) would be because there isn't the bromance that PW has. But I really like the characters, for some reason I thought Sissel would be a bit of a loser, probably because of the inelegant pose he died in. But he turned out to be one cool cat, pun not intended.
I also think that the characters were a bit smarter than PW ones, probably because it does not require you to figure out the plot before it can be advanced. Lynne is probably the dumbest character, it constantly frustrated me how she would leave Sissel in some corner while she ate chicken or something, whereas Jowd and the professor figured out how to take advantage of Sissel's powers right away.
A problem I have with characters from this team though, is that they tend to be a bit black and white. Yomiel aside, cases like Jowd... if a spunky girl tells you he's innocent and that she believes in him, he's goddamn innocent of all crimes, even of shooting the criminal at the park. I actually kind of hoped he did shoot his wife, just to shake things up a bit.
I have to admit, I didn't see the ending coming! Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake?
In any case, I really liked Yomiel too, but who can blame me for liking clever, cool, ruthless bad guys? And he is such an angstmuffin that he's just one big prickly ball of angst.
A few things though: in the park scene, why didn't he possess Lynne's body to make her run instead of throwing her out of the way? In that scene, I honestly thought he was dead, cause he got crushed by the rock, didn't he? At the very least, he should've ended up paralyzed.
Another thing, didn't Jowd say that he was proved innocent 6 months after his death? How come he was still in the prison 10 years later!? Let the poor man out, Jowd! Even if he's in prison for escaping police custody, there's no way he'd be there for 10 years. That's like a sentence for manslaughter!
This might be because I liked Yomiel so much, but I wanted Sissel to go back to him. I mean, him chilling with Jowd's family is nice and all, but they're damn happy. The mother didn't die, Kamila didn't die, Jowd isn't in prison... they're fine. Yomiel is still the one who needs a friend, really.
And lastly... apparently there is no such thing as the butterfly effect in Ghost Trick.
Anyway, great game! Waiting impatiently for Ghost Trick 2! I hope they don't use the same characters! (Except maybe Yomiel.)
