Kerry James Marshall is one of the most intelligent artists alive, if not the most intelligent artist alive. He's so thoughtful and considerate of his process and how it corresponds to an image's meaning. His technique is disciplined but also very open and experimental, not limiting the means of an image's construction to some historically prescribed notion of a division of media, genres, or disciplines of art. And it's so beautiful! So so beautiful! Seeing Kerry's work at this point in my development has been like a bomb going off under my chair; he really has elucidated how I should work on many of my own pieces. I love to read his thoughts and hear him speak on art because he is right on target! He really speaks my language; everything I hear him sat resonates with all my own personal epiphanies about what "making art" means and what "art" can mean and how paint can be put in the service of those two understandings.

God bless this man, he has opened my eyes. Marisa, you especially need to get a hold of a book about Marshall comprised of his own thoughts on art alongside an interview with Arthur Jafa. The ISBN is 0-8109-3527-9. Get this book, read it, and be ready, oh my goodness.
