So - the government is now openly admitting that they go out of their way to mess up traffic flow and create congestion because it increases their fuel tax revenues. Can somebody explain to me how anybody can be caught doing that sort of thing, admit it, and still hope to win the next election? Especially after bringing in congestion charging first ( Read more... )

I would suspect it's something that they've inherited from previous administrations, who inherited it from previous administrations, and so on and so forth. They were just continuing the sleaziness.

More interestingly, why has the media not jumped on this repeatedly before now?

we've all kind of known it was true for ages.. road humps and chicanes, bus stops built out INTO the road and all the damn traffic lights serve no other purpose.. so it seems like old news.

The guidelines may be ages old, but the implementation isn't. It used to be that you could drive through Slough, or from the Chiswick Flyover to Heathrow, and if you were doing the right speed, get nothing but green lights.
If this is no longer the case, then the situation has changed.

Hmm, my impressions of driving those two routes was actually the opposite. They were the two routes I thought of straight off when I saw the articel as ones it was IMPOSSIBLE to drive down and not get caught all the time! But then maybe I arrived in Britain with a considerably more law-abiding do-the-speed-limit mentality than you natives.

Nah, you see, all you have to do is work out what average speed you need to do to catch the next green light. If the speed limits are wrong, you just ignore them. ;)

you mean work out how fast you have to go to catch the green on the previous or previous previous sequence?
Set throttle for Ludicrous speed
