//... music, makes the people, come together, yeah

I'm sick and tired of everyone taking their music so seriously. Why is it that what you listen to completely defines you and the people you can be friends with, and how much you're worth as a person? It's no different than being judged "as a number" by an SAT score or statistic, and people always seem to be complaining about that. If they're not a number, someone who likes a Britney Spears or Ashlee Simpson song isn't a complete idiot consumerist.

The whole "ugh i hate pop music, it's so juvenile and beneath me" attitude doesn't make you any cooler than anyone else; it's just embarassing that you have to cultivate your taste in music to make other people like you and it's usually pretty obnoxious. Don't get me wrong, music is great, but just because some obscure band you listen to plays "SUCH GOOD MUSIC" doesn't mean everyone is going to feel that way. The same goes for pop songs, it's ok for people not to like them if they genuinely don't like the sound. Your musical taste is just that: taste. Nothing more than you're own opinion. Get over being afraid of admitting you like something and stop lying about "how much you hate it" just because it's mainstream. Let your ears decide if you like it, not what your friends say or because it's cool or not.

Just because your music isn't as mainstream as others doesn't mean you're any more insightul as a person and if you feel that way it just shows that you probably tried deliberatley to find something uncommon to try and stand out rather than letting a genuine love of music drive you to try and find those kinds of songs.

I'm not saying that music that isn't mainstream isn't good music. Music is music, and you have to just take it that way rather than only putting rap or punk on your ipod so your friends can see, when in reality you're listening to Hilary Duff at home. I have Shakira, Circle Jerks, Desinty's Child, the Arctic Monkey, Rihanna, Marilyn Manson, Jay-Z and the Faint on the same playlist and I survive.

So just do me a favor: next time you hear a song, try not to think about anything other than how it sounds. Just listen to it and be completely unbiased rather than worrying about how cool or uncool liking it will make you.

"BUT JESSICA SIMPSON DOESN'T GO WITH MY hxc IMAGE!!!" you say? Well fuck you and grow up.

Dolfo
