They lay huddled together as if seeking comfort. The mother’s hand clasped her child’s shoulder while her baby rested against her breast. Danny closed his eyes to prevent the threatened tears from falling. They didn’t deserve to die.
He moved onwards. There were more of the fallen hominids. A whole community sentenced to death. Soon flies would begin to settle and carrion creatures come to feast.
He had failed.
Danny retraced his steps to the flickering glow of the anomaly and stepped through without looking back.
Silence. Emptiness.
Realisation came alongside sickening fear. Helen had truly succeeded.
He was alone.
