Well Holly is obsessed (again) with David Bowie. I was reading the newspaper, and found a picture of him and gave a looksee, thinking she might like the article. Instead it was about Peter Wentz (or however the hell you spell it), bassist and semi-frontman of Fall Out Boy and his scantily clad (read: pornographic) pictures of himself that were "leaked". The article goes on to further disturb me and make the bold statement that emo bands (and they actually use that term quite frequently) are reviving Glam Rock.
Glam rock...remember? all those guys with the tight hair, makeup and distortion-laden guitar licks? Ahh funny stuff. Janes addiction, Whitesnake, Motley Crue...
I read the article and something didn't seem quite right. And then it hit me. Emo bands today and Glam rock bands back then WERE fundamentally similar. They both sang (and i use that term loosely) about chicks, both used very catchy riffs, and wore girl clothes/makeup. The difference? Last time I checked Eddie Van Halen never took wearing spandex and eyeliner that seriously. Wentz and his crew do. To Bowie, it was a fun publicity scam to make a provocative and new image. To these schmoes, its a way of being. a permanent motus apperandi.
But apparently, my scientific study (consulting Holly Herself) has told me that they're not doing so well anymore, so maybe this is the beginning of the end? I dont know about you, but I'd still rather dust off that old Heroes record than drop down 15 bucks for lousy music, and i'm fairly certain Holly Herself would too.
