Violence is a part of nature and life, but there are some limitations in what is acceptable. Animal Activists can cause more problems then good but animal cruelty cases have gone down because of them.
A serious problem we have is animal cruelty. Although animals are killed for reasons beyond our control like car accidents, survival, and nature causes. There are many kinds of cruelty. Just like humans, animals need the correct living conditions; an animal meant for water is not going to survive on land. Animals need attention, love, and care just like everyone and everything else. Animals that are neglected can become depressed, angry, or troublesome just like a normal human. Animals are not invulnerable, they feel pain; if you hit, beat on, or abuse an animal.
Animals are a part of our lives; they comfort us, love us, nurture us, and take care of us. People, who generally abuse their animals, abuse other people. A story in a paper talked about a 18-month old dog was rescued and taken to a shelter after being dragged behind a the owners truck. The dog was taken into the shelter and with the help of care people he was nurtured back to health. He was later adopted by a loving family who cares. (Lauer)
The next story of an animal abuse is poor living conditions, and is actually a personal story about my cat. Colorfest weekend, in Thurmont, Maryland we had a small kitten no bigger then your hand wander across the street to our tent. It was a small runt kitten that was missing his back paw. He couldn’t have been any bigger then your hand. I tried to feed him so of my food, and then later walked him back across the street to his home. I knocked on the door of the owner’s house, and to my surprise he could care less about his cat and her litter of kittens. Needless to say we took him home with us and now he is happy and healthy, the vet said he would have defiantly died if we hadn’t taken him.
An article from earlier this year about horses and murder, just like people murder people, they murder animals. Six horses killed because of the horse’s championships famous horse shows, two of the horses were winners of the Triple Crown. The idea that people are as vengeful towards animals as they are people can be quiet sadistic. Some cases the people who commit these crimes are never taught a lesson, or serve jail time.
Many animals are taken to shelters because they are abused by there owners and removed by caring people or because they are left by there owners. Many people want to adopt animals it’s sad that people don’t care enough to take of them when they own them.
Animal activists speak out for the animals, just because they can’t tell us they are being mistreated doesn’t mean that they are not. Recently activist groups have gained political position, influencing the government to making laws and regulations on the treatment of animals. There are many activist groups, some are entire nonprofit companies dedicated to it. Two that appeared in my research was World Wildlife Fund and PETA.
Animal activist groups raise a lot of controversy, they are sometimes just simple peaceful groups but others are extremists. The most extremist group seems to be PETA, constant press releases about controversial rallies. In July of 2001, a PETA group rallied outside a Wendy’s to protest the way they treated the animals used in the production of their food. Sometimes these protests get out of hand and can lead to arrests. (United Press)
Lawsuits to companies and the government about animal cruelty are generally funded by large nonprofits. In New Jersey, two activists hit a deer and then sued the state for not controlling the deer population growth. (Pagie) Many companies have lobbied to stop the process of laws that could cost them money in change of business practices and research.
Many animal activists do extreme things and cause themselves to be arrested. The longest official recorded sentence for an Animal activist is 18 years, and was for a Barry Horne. He caused millions in damage to British stores, in an Animal activist act. He died in prison in 2001 after going on a hunger strike for animal rights.
Violence needs to be controlled; animals are just as essential as humans. Activists do their part, some try harder then others. Cruelty is a problem that needs be dealt with it, but it’s not a problem that will go away over night. The extremes are what give the activist ideas a bad name, it’s like a stereotype.
