Back to reality

Full moon, obscured by clouds, Central Australia, July 2007.

I had the extreme pleasure of rogaining in Central Australia last month.

Walking through the East MacDonnell Ranges, the hot sun setting over monoliths and rocky ranges, casting impossibly long shadows across the plains; the moon rising over ancient crags, casting it's own shadows from the cloudless night sky ... (the photo was taken the night before the rogaine, which was a bit cloudy :) ) ... the rocks still radiating heat well into the night, but occasional bursts of cold cold air funnelling up some valley to hit you and cool you.

Finally, by about 3am, it was about 5 degrees C - a relatively balmy night for central Aus in mid-winter (it had been reaching MINUS 5 degrees C the previous week). We had had enough, as my feet were blistered after more than a marathon's distance on sharp and uneven terrain over 15 hours.

After a 4.5 year hiatus it was like drinking fresh cool water from a mountain stream. It was a spiritual experience.

(Well, spiritual for me, anyway ;)
