A call to arms for american live journal users. I want YOU. Especially if you know a thing or two about US Colleges/Unis. I'm thinking of doing exchange for a semester over in the states and wish to know stuff about some unis and their programs, people who go there etc.

Testicles

That is all.

Ok, so this coming to the US is becoming a reality. I'm apparently achieving enough to get a scholarship from my uni here in Sydney. It'll only be about $4,000 max but I'm sure I could find a way to come up with the rest. Especially because social security will be paying me AU$160/week whilst overseas so living there shouldn't be too tough.
Boston Uni seems to have a pretty poor ranking and academia. although the city seems like it'd be great. Also, not sure how much fun the snow will be post-uni finishing, as i'd like to spend some time partying in the states.
Are Ohio and Illinois redneck states?
I'm kinda thinking illinois uni - urbana-champaign campus. Have heard great things. What's the crime rate high as it seems a bit excessive in some nearby cities of illinois.

UCLA has a huge crime rate (los angeles does) and heaps of hispanics (almost half) and apparently they're illegal immigrants mostly. I'm not really a fan of this, as one could see the causation b/w this and the crime rate. I wouldn't like to be susceptible to muggings coming home from a night out often.

Cornell seems ages away from trains (60km!!!). So there is no night life it seems?

Penn state doesnt seem too bad. Does it get very cold though in places like pensylvania and ilanoise?

Yes, it gets VERY cold in Pennsylvania and Illinois (don't pronounce the S).

Ohio and Illinois are not considered "redneck" at all.

BU is a good arts school but not that great for marketing and such.

You seem awfully worried about crime rates, but I can assure that unless you skip through the bad parts of a large city (read: New York, Chicago, Boston, LA, etc) late at night, you're not really going to encounter much crime. It happens, sure, but it's not like it's on every street corner in the middle of the afternoon either. You just have to know which places to avoid at which times, and be street-smart. No uttering slurs, no making stupid comments. Common sense stuff.
