Progress: Day 6

Soundtrack: Hot Snakes - Retrofit
First word sprint: 1,804 words

If I had kept writing I would have gotten to 2,000 words AND passed 20k! But I'm trying hard to remember my statement from yesterday: Write for the words, not the word count. I know that goes against a lot of what the purpose of Nanowrimo is, or was initially-- but I've done it so many years now that I've learned how to write actual (somewhat) quality story, with continuing development and action. Why not strive to do that?

Writing during Nanowrimo just happens to be the best time of the entire year to write. I would love to hit 50k and 'win' but I'm more concerned about whether or not I'll finish my stories. I'm just happy to have a time when the writing community BURSTS with life so that I actually get to write a novel alongside some other people. It seems like either no one has the drive I have the rest of the year, or worse: I don't have the drive they have!

Today I completed my goal of introducing what Sam and Dylan's relationship was like, all over the remainder of a dinner date that I started writing yesterday, and some 'without pants' time later in the evening... (Pantsless isn't a word, apparently.) So far, I'm pretty displeased with what is actually happening, because it seems boring and trite and just a way to explain some things before I start fucking with their entire understanding of the universe. (In their story, reality changes so drastically that their wonderful, happy relationship falls apart for seemingly no reason at all.)

Last night, got some work done with Andy and filled in one of the major gaps that still existed. Now I can continue on pleasantly with his story as it happens rather than trying to get the background information (and such) in. I think that by now the reader will know enough to follow the rest of what I write, I mean. (Andy's story is told through memory, and thus isn't 100% accurate to what actually occurred.)

With the elections going it's really hard to focus on writing. I'm going to Mom's after work to follow the polls so I can see who leads, which unfortunately means I'll probably only bang out like 1,000 extra words tonight, but I guess I can give myself a tiny break in light of the fact that THE ENTIRE COUNTRY is at stake here. ;)

I have a 25k reward lined up for Saturday night, ice skating date with the boy (so cozy)-- but ONLY if I reach 25k. Word count has its merits...
