In the midst of writing my essay on the relationship between neocortex size and average social group size, I included a paragraph about social grooming. The person whose research I'm citing suggests that humans use language as a cheap, effective form of social grooming; if this were not the case, if we spent as much time performing "social grooming" as other primates do, you'd have to spend over ten hours a day at it in order to maintain relationships with only 150 others (all of this is based on extrapolation and the assumption that human brains work like monkey brains - big assumptions, here). As I was writing, you know what popped into my head?

"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion."

Kinda neat that there's actual science (albeit fuzzy science) to back that up.
