Latest assigment for Drawing III. We had a choice of two assigments, both involving working with a primary triad using colored pencils on black or white paper. I chose to do the triptych option and illustrated Animal Farm, which I LOOOOOOOVE. In fact, I'm kicking myself for packing my Ralph Steadman-illustrated 50th Anniversary edition instead of bringing it back to SCAD with me. I want to read it again! Anyway, the photos are kinda crap, so I apologize. I tinkered them a bit on the computer to get them to look more like they do in RL, but they still look wonky. If I scanned them it would be a ton better, but, alas, I left the scanner in OK, too.

Oh, and using colored pencils on black paper is the SHIT. You don't have to layer them nearly as much as you do on white. If you use them on white the paper shows through and the piece looks unfinished (in my opinion) unless you build up the wax. But when the paper shows through on black it makes everything look more dimensional and dramatic. Also, limited color palettes rock. This piece would have taken me MUCH longer if I hadn't just been working with primaries. Yeah, this whole piece was colored with 12 different colored pencils (5 different yellows, 3 different reds, 3 different blues, and white). That might still sound like a lot to the non-artistically inclined, but trust me, that's not much. I'm not used to really mixing colored pencils...this was a lot of fun!
