WWYD?

Today I was out with my mom doing a little grocery shopping, etc.  We are in this very busy parking lot of Walmart walking along one of the strip malls next to it (all one big parking lot.)  We hear this baby crying and happen upon a beat up car with the windows down and a baby about the age of Carmina (a year or so) just wailing in the car next to the strip mall.  No mom no dad anywhere around.  So we walk a few more steps and my mom and I agree that the parent probably ran into that store (cash advance place).  But they aren't out there, haven't checked on him since I've been walking towards car (a few minutes) and the baby has obviously been crying for a while.  My mom can see that I'm really really really bugged by it.  So she suggests that I call 911.  And I do.  They take my name and send a squad car towards the car.  I'm afraid to actually stand close to the car for fear of the getting hurt or Carmina hurt (she's in the sling) so I stand a distance away with the car in good sight so I can watch the baby.  The police come and have trouble finding the car (like I said it was BUSY) so they call me and I direct them to where baby is.  In the mean time the Mom comes out, gets in the car and takes off.  I am talking to the dispatcher and they see her and take off after her. When she gets in the car, they send police car number 2 after her.  That's all I saw.

I feel bad.  I don't want to get someone in trouble, but I was really really bugged by it.  All Mommy flags went up and on high alert and the urge to go scoop that baby up and tell him it was okay was ENORMOUS.  And I was standing out there talking to the police for a good 7-10 minutes.  Two minutes is to much in my humble opinion.  So reassure me, did I do the right thing?
