unfair? She knows I don't have a background in immunology. I specifically told her that I had a total of TWO 60-minute lectures on the damn subject. My assignment this week is to construct an argument refuting or defending this statement: "Stem cells represent a novel target for immune attack." There isn't a right answer. Although I'm use to the gray area of science in research, I'm not used to it when I have to write a paper that doesn't have a lucid answer. Not only am I supposed to formulate a persuasive argument for why I think stem cells will be rejected, I have to cite possible mechanisms for their destructions and elaborate on any other issues which may arise as a result of embryonic stem cell-derived tissue transplantation.
First off, I don't even know how the immune system respond to virus and bacteria. I mean, I know a little bit about the innate and the adaptive responses, but I don't know what are the three pathways of the complement mechanisms are. I don't know what toll-like receptors do. How am I supposed to extrapolate whatever little knowledge I have about the mechanisms to predict how the body will respond to stem cells.
God.
