mathematics doesn't lie

My commute to and from work involves walking to Central Square, taking the Red Line from Central to Park St, then transferring to the Green Line (D) and taking that to Newton Highlands, and then walking from there to the office (about 0.8 miles). The whole thing can take anywhere from 55 to 90 minutes depending on how slow the trains move and how long the transfer takes. [There have been several instances where I have sat at Park St and watched more than six other Green Line trains pass by, mostly B and C.]

So, on average, I'd say it takes about 65 minutes each way.

65 minutes * 2 trips per day * 5 days per week = 650 minutes.

650 minutes / 168 hours = 6.45%.

That's a lot. :(

It's funny, because I'm starting to enjoy work much more, since the last time I reported on it. I switched projects, and am able to just know that I am working full time on one project and getting it done in my own disjointed way, attention span jumping every which way, code left unfinished until I can pop back up the stack and get to it. (Or until it fails to compile and I remember "oh yeah I was going to write that wasn't I".)

But the commute is starting to bother me more and more. I feel so very weary in the mornings, and maybe it is time for a change of pace.

I think I want to start looking around at companies in the Kendall Square or Central Square area (or even Porter/Davis/downtown Boston). I know of several companies already that I may want to talk to (Google, Akamai, Harmonix but I don't think my skills match up with the positions they have open) but there are almost certainly companies I have never heard of that would work out just fine.

So I am opening up the floor to suggestions. I mean, it can't hurt. And if nothing looks good or nobody wants me, then I keep the status quo and life is sub-optimal but still okay.
