tales of a peripatetic

I was waiting for a long-running process to finish at work and, in doing so, missed the 5:40 train. Staying till 7:15 was infeasible, so I decided instead to walk to the D line, to get some much-needed exercise. That first bit was a three mile stretch from Needham to Newton.

At one point I was standing on a small, triangular island (coordinates 42.301944,-71.227021). It was completely dark out, there happened to be no cars on Highland Ave but an intense light source behind me from the car dealership. Up in the dark sky were a few stars, and there were three radio towers off in the distance glowing brightly. The only sound in my ears was from the music in my iPod.

I had the feeling right then that if I hadn't been in such a hurry to get home I would have lay down on the grass there and spent hours staring off into the sky, listening to the music, letting everyone else rush onwards past me. (The location might have been an issue eventually, too.) One of these days, I should take the same route to the train and take a picture after dark.

The three miles from the office to the Newton Highlands stop took about 50 minutes. I took the train from there to Hynes, and walked north on Mass Ave from there, across the Harvard Bridge. The wind was out in full force so I kept my head down and the music loud and tried my hardest to ignore it all, willfully restricting my sensory input to sight and sound.

From Hynes to my apartment in Central Square is another 1.5 miles. Not a bad total for a single day, especially considering how little exercise I usually get. I should keep this up. Or, more likely, I'll give up and get lazy and fat.

Happy belated <3 day, everyone.
