A comment I made in someone else's journal about Snape an Harry that I kinda liked

I think I'm somewhere in the middle where it comes to Snape and Harry, to be completely honest. Harry gets away with a lot of crap because he is Harry Potter, Dumbledore even admits he favors him at the end of OoTP. Remember the House Cup first year that should rightfully have gone to Slytherin? Not to mention the fact that he got, what, some ( Read more... )

kind of, sort of related to this... n_isfor_neville August 1 2006, 04:01:28 UTC
One thing that always gets me is why Harry doesn't really care about any subject besides DADA (which obviously, with the Prophecy is a good idea, but he might need to transfigure himself a weapon at some point too one day). To me, if I was raised as a muggle never knowing magic exists until my 11th birthday, as soon as I got the chance, I'd read about every spell I could and practice it, because I'd want to know exactly what I could do. I wouldn't take it as far as Hermione, but I would want to practice Charms and Transfiguration just because I could. And I happen to think that Potions would be a very interesting subject. I guess Harry is just too busy having friends and a social life for once, though. But Harry is smart, or at least he does pay attention to details. He figures things out when know one else does, important things.

That's true, I probably would, too. I mean, doesn't anyone who reads the books? Probably it's just JKR trying to make it seem more like typical school, and plus, a lot of it seems to be these long essays and things which I know I probably wouldn't be all that excited about. But yeah, it's funny he's never really more excited about magic in general, that a lot of the time he's barely even interested. Especially since he does have to defeat this powerful wizard at some point, you'd think he'd really want to lern more spells.

To be honest, at the last scene in HBP, if Harry had thought about thigns rationally, it'd just have looked stupid. He'd just watched Dumbledore get killed, he wasn't really thinking straight, it was more of a 'HULK SMASH!' mentality.

That's true, not to mention, it wouldn't have really been Harry, would it? I just figured that maybe that's why she put that scene in there in the first place since it was such a reversal of what generally goes down between Harry and Snape. Like, what she was trying to communicate, one last lesson from the professor as it were.

I swear, I do like Harry, as often as I get down on him...

It was extremely silly and rather arrogant of him to think that he could beat a wizard like Snape on sheer magical ability alone, and the lesson there was that, no, just being Harry Potter isn't enough sometimes, sometimes you've got to think, you've got to strategize, you've got to go against your first impulse.

And the funny thing is, he makes that comment "If I see Snape, so much the worse for him, so much the better for me" (or something along those lines), which strikes me as plain bravado.
I mean he's talking about the man who handed him his ass two days previously! How exactly is he planning to take him on?

I think this is why there were so many theories spawned that Book7 will have Harry getting DADA lessons. He needs them if he's planning to infiltrate a DE camp for a showdown with Voldemort.

Do you mind if I friend you? Let me know if you do.

I love new friends, so go on ahead. :)

He's still thinking like, "because I am Harry Potter, I can do ANTHING" which is bullshit. Even though it's sort of what he's been trained to think because of the whole, 'your love will save you' line. But yes, I can't imagine how he's planning to get Snape at all if he's not going to work on his Occlumency and if he's not going to work at DADA. He can think Snape's a pathetic, bitter old man all he wants, but he can't let that allow him to underestimate him.

...I'm sort of hoping Snape delivers yet another smackdown next book. Or, better yet, is the one to teach Harry that DADA that he needs, arrogant little sod that he is. I dunno, we so rarely get to see Snape in his element. I'd like to.

Oooh me too! That would be like a consolation prize for all the Snapefans if he ends up dead
