Supernatural and HP thoughts

Ok, so, what's interesting is that, although very little new H/D fic seems to be being written, a whole lot of people are still requesting different kinds of H/D fics every day on newsletters and stuff. THE SHIP SAILS ON. That is all. ^^

Or should I say submarine?

Anyway, I've been away and with no internet for a week. Thanks for all the comments to my last post, though, that discussion was awesome and amazing. And I sorta wish essay girl could have seen it. Here is Draco and Scorpius art from Makani that you MUST go see. Especially since it does feature Draco's receding hairline. :)

Aaaand a poll for the Supernatural fans on my flist. Pimp it out, although it looks like a lot of people have answered already. Best comment ever over here. XD It's so true. I mean, I honestly do like horror and tend to gravitate towards sci-fi/fantasy/horror stuff anyway, but the thing that totally sold me on the show was Dean and Sam's relationship. That moment with the Lucky Charms - totally something that's happened to me. And, of course, there's also Dean himself. How do I love Dean? Let me count the ways.

Me and a friend were talking the other day and we figured out that, if the Wincesters were the Malfoys, Dean would totally be Narcissa, Sam would be Draco, and Papa Wincester would be Lucius. You know, because when it starts, Lucius totally seems like the one in control; Narcissa follows him around and Draco kinda rebels against him from Hogwarts. But in the end, it's really Narcissa that's at the heart of that family and when everyone else is falling apart, she steps up to the plate and takes care of business in any way she has to. And that's Dean all over; he seems sorta benign in a way until it comes to his dad or his brother and then....literally anything goes.

Which is interesting coming out of the HP fandom. Because in HP, pretty much all passive sacrifice and all nurturing is done by women. Luna’s got the only single dad, Arthur Weasley was never nearly as involve, I’ve already talked about the Malfoys, and of course Lily made the ultimate sacrifice (it was a toss-up, actually, whether to compare Dean more to her or to Narcissa, but he pretty much brought Sam up and kept his dad from losing it, so…Narcissa). Also, Ginny quietly sacrifices her happiness for Harry’s quest, Hermione pretty much gets Harry and Ron through Hogwarts academically, Luna gets Harry over Sirius’s death by comforting him, Tonk’s entire purpose, it seems, was to breed and on and on, you get the idea. I guess Snape’s really the only possible exception there, because even though he despised Harry, he was teaching him up until the last moment in book 6 and did attempt to teach Draco, but even that really goes almost completely unappreciated in the end. All that matters is that Snape loved Lily, that’s what redeems him, which is why his being out of the picture completely when Harry makes his peace with him probably didn’t bother Rowling. Oh, and of course you have Neville, but his nurturing nature isn’t the thing that defines him in the end and actually, is completely downplayed in book 7. That Rowling sort of uses this natural instinct to nurture to define women probably comes from the innateness of Lily’s sacrifice (she wasn’t good because she sacrificed, she was good because she sacrificed instinctively, that was what gave Harry protection), but it’s kinda limiting.

So I guess it’s nice to watch a series where the creators draw very different gender barriers. Dean’s about the most stereotypically masculine, macho guy ever, but at the same time, he’s a total nurturer and is pretty much the glue that holds his family together. He was the one to basically raise his brother, he was the one to sacrifice his own happiness in order to help his father out with the hunting, and he’s still the one looking out for Sam. In fact, that’s his designated job, look out for Sam at all costs. And while he does, at times, leap before looking, he is the most likely out of all three (well, two now) Winchesters to be like ‘wait...do we have A PLAN?’ I mean, he’s totally an active hunter and everything, but his best moments are those of quiet (or loud, if you count his using the colt on that guy in season one and killing Meg) sacrifice for Sam or for his father. And while it does balance out his machismo to some extent, it’s cool that they pretty much make this need to always take care of Sam so central to his character (maybe to an unhealthy extent, but eh). I mean, I guess it helps that the show itself is all about family and sacrifice and there’s also the fact that there really aren’t all that many reoccurring female characters so who knows, maybe if there were, it’d be different (I guess we’ll see this season), but for now, I guess it’s maybe a big part of what draws me to the show, despite it's dubious take on race and it's actual treatment of women.

Although, honestly, if I had to sort Dean, I think I'd go with Hufflepuff and not Slytherin, despite his 'must protect my family by any means necessary' attitude, just because he's not...ambitious in the way you need to be in order to be in Slytherin. Papa Winchester's the Slyth, and of course Sam's a total Ravenclaw. BECAUSE IT IS MY JOB TO SORT EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING EVEN IF IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HP.
