The "piece of eight" was a Spanish silver coin worth eight reales that was a transatlantic trade currency and the eventual basis for not just every currency with the name "peso" but the U.S. and Canadian dollars (so-called because the Anglosphere kept calling the Spanish coins by the name we'd used for the German coins they edged out).
