I had the pleasure of meeting Gennady, Natalia and Anastasia in Barcelona when I was their English teacher. We became friends. Gennady and Natalia invited me to their house and cooked delicious meals, we visited Barcelona, I babysat Anastasia. I don’t become friends with a lot of students, but this family are especially wonderful. The amount of love, fun and laughter in this family unit was enchanting.
As individuals, they were all special, but as a family they were incredible. Not only did they lovingly take care of each other, but they also extended that to all the people they met. It was clear how much Gennady and Natalia were in love, and it was clear how much they loved their daughter Anastasia. They treated each other lovingly, gently, and with respect. They enjoyed each other’s company like no family I knew. Despite being in an uncertain situation in a foreign country where they didn’t speak the language, they embraced together all things life has to offer - diving, exploring, learning languages, sharing great food with friends, and it was a pleasure to be in their company.
I lost contact with them when they went to America, and was overjoyed to discover them a few years later on Facebook. That is when I learned that Natalia had died. Overcome by sadness, I googled to find out what had happened to her, finding out that Gennady had been arrested for Natalia’s murder and Anastasia deprived of not only her mother but also her father. OUTRAGEOUS. Gentle Gennady, who was loving to his wife and daughter at every moment I witnessed them together? The perfect gentleman who took any opportunity to act kindly towards others? Why? The lack of evidence against him is astounding, what has gone wrong with the justice system?
I cried hard when I heard of Natalia’s death. I cried even harder when I heard of the tragic injustice against Gennady and Anastasia. For this to happen to such a loving, gentle, honest family - it is a supreme insult to them and a supreme mistake.
