Love Live Long
2008 / Drama / 75 min.

Director: Mike Figgis
Cast: Sophie Winkleman, Daniel Lapaine

When Mike Figgis was invited to make a film about Gumball 3000 Rally, rather than focus on the event itself he responded with a story about the effect of the rally on two people caught up in it, creating a love story of sorts shot across three countries. The starting point was a one page treatment and two actors cast shortly before filming, with Figgis and his three fellow crew members completing shooting in just seven days. Built around a chance sexual encounter between a married rally driver and a self-destructive young woman he meets en route, Love Live Long is a bold study of desire and moral boundaries, its raw intimacy sometimes unsettling to watch. As we would expect, Figgis is expert at exploiting the creative capabilities of digital technology, and at providing the narrative twists which subvert our expectations.

Director: Julian Jarrold
Cast: Emma Thompson, Matthew Goode, Ben Wishaw, Hayley Atwell
Website: www.thefilmfactory.co.uk/brideshead

A heartbreaking romantic epic, Brideshead Revisited tells an evocative story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence set in the pre-WWII era. In the film, Charles Ryder becomes entranced with the noble Marchmain family, first through the charming and provocative Sebastian, and then his sophisticated sister, Julia. As Charles’ emotional attachment to the entire Marchmain clan deepens, however, he finds himself and his atheism increasingly at odds with the family’s ardent Catholic beliefs, rigidly enforced by the matriarch, Lady Marchmain. The rise and fall of Charles’ infatuations reflect the decline of a decadent era in England between the wars.
