Smug snap judgments on the cultural and political background of European academics are now used, as in this book, to delegitimize the contribution of a major scholarly tradition, by hinting that those who contributed to it were right-wing, monarchist, even sympathetic to Fascism.
What is lost in this lighthearted demonization of the past is any sense of the enduring complexity and of the intrinsic difficulty of the substantive intellectual problems that were faced by scholars in those times as in our own.
