Seeing a happy couple stay together and remain pretty happy can be boring, especially if it's written poorly.

*nods* This. One of the things I'm wrestling with in one of my storyverses is how much I believe in the lasting relationship of my OTP, and yet, how to make it still compelling to read about. Its certainly an interesting conundrum, and you're right ~ there aren't alot of great examples of it in pop culture or media.

I would thank Joss Whedon for creating them, but...

LOL!

Good luck with your doctor's appointment on Monday ~ I hope it goes as well as he expects!

I think you should probably look into the everyday dramas of domestic life. People can still deal with loss and pain within a strong, healthy relationship. The relationship can be tested, but it can also pass the test. Living with other people is always hard. It's easier and more fun if you're head over heels for the person you live with, but it's still not a cakewalk.

I think it's easier for writers to get stuck on newness and "firsts" within a relationship. I don't think I've branched out much beyond that in fanfiction, myself. But life is about more than the relationship and there is a ton of drama out there. It's just trickier to tap into because we see it done so rarely in entertainment media.

*shrug*

Joss giveth, and Joss taketh away. D:

This is pretty much the line I'm taking, I think. The relationship of the couple is the thread that holds the entire continuum/storyverse together (and it's threatening to stretch long in years at this point, LOL), so its the backbone, and the backbone has to be strong. I love them, and their relationship, and they're going to have their trials and tribulations and crises, but hopefully in a way that seems more real and less soap operaish, if that makes any sense.

Lives without drama are boring to contemplate, much less read about ~ but the drama doesn't have to be earth-shattering to be compelling. The little bumps in the road are what really gives 'em their depth, I think =)

We'll see how successful I am in this endeavor. It is, of course, for a fandom that consists of maybe five people, on a good day :P

Which fandom?

In any case, I think you have the right idea on how to make an established relationship pretty darn good.

Kids Inc - which is another reason I want to get this wacko troll issue nipped in the bud o.O I don't need or want someone dogging my heels through two potentially epic-length fics (and any number of related oneshots) simply because he doesn't ~approve~ of my pairing.

In any case, I think you have the right idea on how to make an established relationship pretty darn good.

Amusingly enough, this is the way I prefer to write S/K fic - established relationship fic as opposed to the whole getting together business :P So hopefully that experience will hold me in good stead...we'll see, I suppose =)
