Where is the SCA going?

I have been thinking about this for a while and now with the non member surcharge going to $5 and the new Pennsic A&S rules I feel like I need to say something about it. When I started with the barony there was no surcharge and at the time being a poor college student it was often all I could do affording to go to events. I know event fee’s for the most part are not overly expensive but by the time you add in gas food, ect it was not cheap and is still not. I get that the SCA inc. is hurting for money trust me Angie and I are struggling to make ends meet right now. I know $5 bucks does not seem like a lot of money but with site fee’s rapidly approaching $10 at a lot of sites you are 50% again to the fee and I can remember when $15 was a, lot money. We are having a hard enough time getting new members and there is a lot more competition for people free time and often many things we compete agents cost less. I feel in general if we don’t people attached by their mid to late 20’s it becomes infinitely harder to get them after that.

As far as the Pennsic rules changes for A&S and youth I think they are taking the rule to far I could understand list some classes along the line of movies and I know some classes are listed as adult only. But by making it so parents have to attend all classes with teenagers it makes it very difficult for all involved. I mean the class they want to attend could be completely different and then no one wins.

So I ask this do these changes make the SCA better? No

Will these changes hurt recruitment? Yes

So where do we go now.
