I saw Narnia today. It was 97,000,000 or so times better than i thought. My resume is still a work in progress and is still awesome though I'm getting hung up on some details.
In class we talked about how in the fellowship of the ring Gandalf says something about how it is really foolish to despair, because that is assuming you know what is going to happen (and its going to be bad.) And no one KNOWS what's going to happen.
I like that idea. Almost nothing is ever hopeless. And the cross, as I read in a book by this awesome dude Philip Yancey, is a message of utmost hope when hope seems to be gone-- many people staked their lives and hope on Jesus and then he died in a violent and humiliating way. Just when it seemed like all hope was entirely gone, he came back. I gotta think about this in my life some-- I despair about things when I have no idea how they're going to turn out. Yay Gandalf! Yay Jesus!
Did I mention in here already that Tolkien and Lewis studied together and Tolkien was the one who convinced Lewis he should convert to Christianity? He told Lewis that all he loved in myth and fantasy, the nobility and the courage and the distinction between right and wrong, could all be found in Christianity...which was not myth, but true. I find a lot of similarities between Lewis' and Tolkien's work, consequently... but more like variations on a same theme. There's a lot of beauty in both.
