CHRISTMAS SPECIAL ROUNDUP

Jul 21, 2010 12:58

I'm bored and I don't want to continue studying so here is a DOCTOR WHO MEDIA ROUNDUP POST.

There is very little in the way of spoilers -- I've cited possible spoilers, but really it's just speculation. I just don't want Starwhales coming at me and scolding me harshly.

Christmas Guest Stars Revealed!
July 12th 2010

It's been confirmed that the BAFTA-winning Sir Michael Gambon and Welsh star Katherine Jenkins are playing major roles in the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special.

The adventure will star Matt Smith as the Doctor, alongside Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as Rory. They'll be joined by, amongst others, Michael Gambon, one of the industry's most respected actors who has starred in TV classics such as The Singing Detective and Longitude as well as Academy Award-winning films including Gosford Park and Sleepy Hollow. Recently he has become popular with a new generation, right across the world as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies.

Katherine Jenkins also stars in the special. She's currently best known as a mezzo-soprano and is one of the world's most successful classical singers. 'I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special!' Katherine said. 'I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!'

THAT'S RIGHT STARWHALES

DUMBLEDORE IS GOING TO BE ON DOCTOR WHO

IS IT CHRISTMAS YET

Oh and here is a video of Katherine Jenkins singing "Hallelujah". I assume her role will have some sort of singing in it, otherwise why would you hire a mezzo-soprano, but stranger things have happened.

Doctor Who's Christmas Yet to Come
July 12th 2010

Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning, has revealed that this year's Christmas special will be, 'Doctor Who's clever twist on the much loved A Christmas Carol'.

The adventure of Scrooge and his visions, as told in A Christmas Carol, was first published on 19 December, 1843 and has since become synonymous with festive cheer. But this timeless classic was almost never written...

In 1843, Charles Dickens - whom the Doctor encountered in The Unquiet Dead - planned to write a pamphlet entitled 'An Appeal to the People of England, on Behalf of the Poor Man's Child', intended to draw attention to the plight of the vast underclass of London. But fortunately, the canny writer abandoned this idea when he realised that an imaginative and emotional story would have greater impact. The result was his mini-masterpiece, A Christmas Carol, or to give the tale its full title, 'A Christmas Carol, in prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas'.

Christmas Special - More Details Emerge
July 12th, 2010

More details are beginning to emerge about the 2010 Christmas Special with Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning, revealing the adventure will be, 'Doctor Who's clever twist on the much loved A Christmas Carol'.

Lead Writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, confirmed, 'Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. And ... oh, you'll see. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically!'

It's already been announced that stellar guest stars including veteran actor Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Singing Detective) and opera diva Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role, will be joining Matt Smith (the Doctor), Karen Gillan (Amy) and Arthur Darvill (Rory).

The Christmas adventure will be a one-hour special. The read-through took place in Cardiff on Thursday, 8 July and production begins today. Filming on it will continue until August, 2010.

Doctor Who news (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
June 29th, 2010

Filming for the Christmas Special will begin July 12-16 in Swansea. The episode is being written by Steven Moffat and will feature both a former cast member of legendary British soap Eastenders and a Hollywood actor. There are also rumors of a "big, big name playing a massive role", which likely describes one of those two other people. "Silence", the major arc of series six, is mentioned at least once in the special, and we hear again from the creepy voice first heard in the TARDIS during The Pandorica Opens - apparently this voice still has some control of the TARDIS.

As for the story itself, this is still up in the air. It was originally thought the special would be set in 1500's England, possibly involving Henry VIII. However, the lines about the Egyptian goddess and the Orient Express in space at the end of The Big Bang were an absolute last minute addition, so they may represent the new direction for the special.

Either way, there are rumors the special will have undertones of A Christmas Carol - something that's been rumored since at least The Runaway Bride, but still - complete with a possible appearance by a past Doctor as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Those Doctors under consideration for this are supposedly Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and David Tennant, which makes sense when you consider the other Doctors' ages, appearances, or total unwillingness to ever have anything to do with the show ever again. (Also, a few of them are dead, which I guarantee is the only thing stopping Patrick Troughton.) This is probably all nonsense anyway, but here's hoping for a little multi-Doctor goodness.

Moving onto series six, Rory will indeed remain as the Doctor's companion, and in fact will have "loads more to do", which makes me very happy indeed. Amy has "a biiiig secret to get off her chest (nothing bad)!" Obviously, the semi-literal way to interpret that wording is that she's pregnant, but I kind of hope that's not the case. Most importantly, River Song is definitely back, but with a big difference: when we see her in series six, it'll be the first time she meets the Doctor.

And here's who is reportedly writing for the next series: Steven Moffat (of course), Neil Gaiman (probably Episode 3), Paul Cornell, Tom MacRae, Phil Ford (who might be handling the non-Moffat two-parter), and Rob Shearman. As always, please treat these message-board reports as rumor until they're confirmed via official channels.

Finally, on The Sarah Jane Adventures front, Amy and Rory will likely be off on their honeymoon when the Doctor makes his guest appearance, but it's hard to tell whether that's an actual rumor or just a very reasonable guess.

Dear Steven Moffat,

I will love you forever if you make this happen.

I know we've had our disagreements in the past, but I'll forgive them all if you give me this. It doesn't have to be now, I mean, it could be next year. Just think about it.

Regards,

So tell me starwhales -- what are your thoughts on the Christmas Special? Any theories? Speculation? Something you'd like to see specifically? Any thoughts on Season 6? Anything you're excited about in particular?

(Oi, mods. I tried to add "christmas special" and "series 6" tags but for some reason livejournal was all NO! so I'll just leave that to you. Well I know why I couldn't, I just reject the reasoning.)
