Poll: Are you outraged by the current Expanded Universe? (updated)

Jan 01, 2008 11:38

If you’re one of those fans who’re unhappy with the post-NJO EU, this is your chance to register your dissatisfaction. (Thanks to polgarawolf for her indispensable help in compiling and formatting the list, and for the wonderful quote at the end.) This poll contains many major complaints, but it’s hardly definitive. I’m prepared to consider any additional ( Read more... )

My personal hates are:

Death of Anakin, Death of Mara, Sexism in SW, and favouristism of the BIG THREE.

I HATE how the Big Three can do no wrong, if they can kill off someone like Chewie or Anakin, they can certainly explore other aspects of Luke, Leia, or Han without making them out to be the good guys ALL the time.

Luke killed Lumiya in cold blood. And yet, there is apparently is nothing wrong with that. That made me mad.

I'll tally those up for you, shall?

Well, Luke murdering Lumiya was also majorly out-of-character for him. That's what infuriated me about all that.

Still, I suppose I could make a case for favoritism of the Big Three. I might even agree with it. Would you like me to add it to the poll?

I only skimmed most of this, because the only EU I've read is Clone Wars era. But #25 stands out to me. Vader killed the Emperor, then died himself. THAT'S IT. No one came back to life, damnit! I don't want to read any of that crackified post-ROTJ stuff.

I must say though that there is tragedy in Star Wars too, it's not just comedy. I don't cry watching comedies. Well, usually *g*

People, myself included, will keep looking to the EU to keep Star Wars alive for them. We just have to remember to take it with a grain of salt.

One for #25, got it.

Yeah, there are some tragedy aspects to Star Wars, but on the whole, it's a comedy (speaking in Shakespearian terms, not film terms). It has some sad moments, but overall, it's a happy story.

A freighterload, in the post New Republic eras' cases.

Ah, yes, the Shakespearian definition - it's been so long since I've been in school I don't recall it exactly but okay then, I agree - good guys win, happy times, blah blah.

Heh. People have warned me to stay away from the EU entirely. CW-era at least isn't as kooky as the NJO stuff.

14- They're still doing a better job than some of the previous novels. I still can't stand the Black Fleet trilogy because everyone but Han and Chewie were massively OOC.

15- Meh. I haven't had a problem with it thus far.

16- Because Aayla Secura, Leia, Darth Talon, Asajj Ventress, Mirax, Iella, Winter, Jarael, Aurra Sing, Jaina, Belindi Kalenda, Tra'Saa, Khaleen Hentz, Isard, Tavira, etc. have never ever done anything awesome for themselves. There's any number of awesome female characters in the EU.

17- I'm pretty sure guidebooks are more canon than the fluff.

18- I suppose you're not a fan of anime, then, where the twelve-year-old prodigies get everything done. And you just said it yourself, SW humans live longer. Thus, with proper medical treatment, middle-aged characters there should still be active and vital.

19- This is because they're writing for a human audience. People always want to believe that humans are the ones who can make a difference because we're human. Look at any sci fi or fantasy setting wherein there ( ... )

Just in case I'm coming off as confrontational: I mean no disrespect against fans who don't like the EU. I'm just very, very annoyed that a lot of the time when I mention that I still like it I have to justify it to whoever I'm talking to and I get very, very annoyed by it. ...and I don't know why I felt the need to post a point-by-point defense first thing in the morning. I can delete it and sum it up as "I don't have a problem with most of it" if need be.

Just in case I’m coming back as confrontational: I mean no disrespect against fans who like the current EU. I’ve often gotten a similar feeling when trying to argue the non-merits of the New Jedi Order and Legacy eras (although admittedly, I do often sorta go looking for trouble). I know why I felt the need to post a point-by-point rebuttal of your defense, but I can let it go. As far as I’m concerned, your defense is fine, but I disagree and I’m not going to stop arguining.

Oh, to hell with rewriting your paragraph. I’m sorry if my attitude offended you. It’s New Jedi Order/Legacy I hate, not you. You like the current EU, and that’s fine. I won’t say I like it (any more than I like it when someone smokes, or plays really annoying music) but I’ll try my hardest not to hold it against you. If you’re really offended by all this, I can delete it and sum it up as “Let’s agree to disagree on that.”

i agree with some of your points, but i totally disagree with WHY you hate them. if anything, i feel that star wars needs MORE suffering, more humanity, and for the love of god, just a tiny bit of character development. it irritates the hell out of me that everything they go through turns out okay in the end, with virtually no price paid for any of it - i don't find it interesting in the least when the heroes get out of the plot unscathed.

of course, i've said to my husband many times that i would have killed off nearly everyone in RotJ and ended the movie with luke burning vader on the pyre - the rebellion victorious and the hero alone.

It seems we agree on two points out of three. And I wouldn't even necessarily mind more suffering, if it was better executed and less heavy-handed. There are more and more interesting ways of making your characters suffer than just killing off numerous other characters.

But humanity, yes. Character development, yes. Though mind you, there's even less of both in Legacy of the Force and Dark Nest than there was in the movies and Bantam era. New Jedi Order also did a much poorer job than it could have, and by rights should have.

We obviously prefer very different types of fiction. If the movies had gone the way you described, I would never have been a fan of the series in the first place. But it didn't, and I don't think it's right to make it into a series all about death and pain and people acting out of character any more than it would be to take one of your type of stories and resurrect all the dead characters and give it a spotlessly happy ending
