Going to bed in ...

So, I have been diligently reading all my Diana Wynne Jones books, in order of publication. I haven't been posting on the subject as I can't see anyone being very interested in a post on how unapologetically not-happy a lot of the endings seem to be, or, if not actively not happy, they're neither actively happy and usually don't ignore the serious, longterm ramifications of problems introduced in the plot that can't simply be resolved by a bit of smiting and tea (although those things are good and have their place).

I also haven't been posting because typing takes up valuable time that /could/ be spent fighting alien robots in Earthbound, and yelling at Ness for getting homesick /again/, God, we called Mom right before we left for the Pyramids, what is your /problem/.

I'm on The Homeward Bounders now, and my memories of how upsetting I found it when I first read it, in high school, have me approaching it slowly and nervously, all keyed up and wincing whenever I hit a passage that foreshadows things I know will depress me utterly when I eventually reach the end. I should just yank the proverbial bandaid and read it all in a rush, but I'm terrible about removing bandaids, too.

On the bright side, once I have bit the bullet of book, there's a whole stretch of books that are lovely and don't contain memories of me crying piteously in a hotel bathtub.

Of course, I will probably speed through those, and then I'll have to deal with Black Maria, an even more daunting prospect.

In theory, at the end of all this, there should be the new House of Many Ways. However, despite the book having been published in the UK (and presumably here) a week ago, the local bookstores continue to deny its existence. I am peeved. Will I have to make someone with a credit card buy it for me? Don't drive me to this, Saskatoon.
