This afternoon I decided to let myself splurge for once this year and go to a movie on opening weekend. Truth be told, I just want to be a part of those Monday movie earnings numbers supporting movies that are not lame comedies. So, my matinee money went to Breach, the new spy drama starring Chris Cooper (who I've come to realize is one of my favorite actors) and Ryan Phillippe.
The movie stands as a solid drama and almost stands as solidly as a thriller, but you can't really expect anything less from an espionage story. The majority of the story focuses on Phillippe's character and his assignment and how it's potentially wrecking his relationship with his wife, which is interesting enough, I suppose, but I just find Ryan Phillippe sort of bland and boring. Chris Cooper has been in half the spy movies I can think of, and he's often a large part of what sells it, and he doesn't disappoint here. He makes his character very human. I can't come up with a better way to explain it, really.
The story is nothing spectacular, but it's a good show nonetheless. I give it 4 out of 5 stars on my cute little movielens thing, though I'm just a sucker for this kind of movie. And with this, I've finally rated three hundred movies! Yay!
