Summary: Loki is sentenced to death and in order to save him, Thor must take him to one of the most dangerous places for his brother to be: Midgard.
“Why did you return so late from Asgard?”
Thor looked over at Loki as he held their son between their bodies on the bed, completely ignoring the cradle nearby. While he would insist on the cradle when they slept, just in case, it felt too good to be clustered together to move right then. Their new family and Thor honestly had not thought this would be the outcome when he’d released Loki from prison over a year ago.
“It was merely final preparations. We may return to Asgard, all three of us, when you desire.”
Skeptical green eyes looked up at him. “Shall I be escorted in chains?”
“No! Father persuaded the court to accept that you took the Casket of Ancient Winters to secure a lasting peace with Jotunheim for Asgard and have paid for your wrongs against Midgard. The court accepted that you have made amends to those you have caused harm to and there will be no further punishment.”
“I wonder how much he had to give up for that,” Loki muttered, but Thor thought he heard a sense of relief in his voice.
“Do you…want to return to Asgard?” he asked quietly.
“Do you?” Loki responded, touching the closed hand of their sleeping son.
“I…” How could he answer that? Part of him missed Asgard very much and the week he’d spent there with their parents had been a balm he hadn’t realized he needed. On the other hand, the people he’d lived with for more than a year here were the greatest of his friends. He loved Midgard and those on it. Both places were in his home.
“You would prefer we remained here.”
“I…cannot deny it. They are both home to me,” he admitted.
“They are not to me,” Loki said bluntly and Thor winced. “Neither Asgard nor Midgard is my home. My home…is with you and Balder.”
Thor touched Loki’s black hair softly. “If I chose to remain here on Midgard, you would stay?”
“Where else would you have us go?” Green eyes flashed in warning. “However, I must insist that now that our son is born, you will speak to the Avengers. I will no longer bear hiding our relationship. If I desire to kiss you in view of the mortals, I demand the right to do so bedamned their sensibilities.”
Balder shifted between them, making a little mewing sound, and he stroked his son’s head to calm him, setting him back to a deep sleep. “Yes. I desire to commence the ceremony for you as my husband, both in Asgard and Midgard soon.”
“You wish to make me an honorable man?”
The tease made Thor smile. “I wish to make you mine.”
He didn’t think Loki would respond to that, but finally, after a soft smile, he quietly admitted, “You did that long ago.”
“When was that?”
“It was two thousand years ago, when we were but seven hundred and you were as thickheaded as a bilgesnipe. The snow was heavy that year and you dragged us out for a hunt regardless, the two of us. We were separated by a snowstorm that you, in your idiocy never thought would happen, and you almost froze to death. Without my magic, you would have died. You made such a bad pun about melting the snow that I couldn’t help but hit you on the head for it.”
Thor frowned a little in embarrassment. “I do acknowledge that that was a very foolish thing to do, but-”
Loki ignored him and kissed Balder’s forehead. “We were lost, even you finally admitted that, but I think when I became yours is when you said ‘If I had to be lost, or by the Norns dead, then there is no better time than at your side’.” Thor grinned. He honestly didn’t remember much of that hunt, but if Loki did, all the better. Sharp eyes glared at him. “Do not dare repeat this to anyone.”
“I would never, for it is something precious to just us.”
His brother shifted onto his back. “We must change the subject now. It has become far too ‘mushy’ to suffer.”
He laughed. Loki had changed over the years and for a long time, particularly after they had begun to fight on opposite sides, he had feared he had lost the brother, the man, he loved. It was not until he had begun to look not at the past, but at the present and future that he realized that the person he’d sought had not disappeared. Loki was still the same in all ways that mattered. “Give me one boon, my love.”
Green eyes looked at him warily. “What?”
“I wish to hear you say it, just once more.”
Loki understood what he was asking and there was a long moment of silence. It seemed as if his brother drew on some inner strength that he needed and their eyes met fearlessly, just as it had so long ago during that fateful hunt. The moment that stuck with him from that hunt so long ago, when Loki had found him; his eyes had almost seemed like emerald crystals, determined and fierce to save his brother. That core had remained entirely unchanged over the years and he just hadn’t seen it.
“I love you, Thor Odinson.”
Thor could only smile. “And I love you, Loki Odinson.” He leaned forward and captured those lips in a soft kiss before lifting up his left hand. The ensorcelled ring was still there and his thumb rubbed along the metal softly before kissing it as well. Loki rolled his eyes despite a soft blush and sat up, gently moving their son to the cradle. It was close to the bed so they could still reach out to touch him if they chose.
He wrapped his arms around his brother from behind and pulled him back to his chest as they watched the rise and fall of Balder’s chest. “You said you would kill me. I could hear you from outside the room,” he commented quietly in amusement.
“…Not tonight. I make no promises in the future.”
He smiled brightly, knowing in his heart Loki didn’t mean it. “When you do, I shall be glad of that day as well.”
“Fool.”
“Most likely.”
In the reflection of a nearby mirror, he saw Loki smile.
