Remembering my promise to Cordelia I climb down the manhole and hang onto the ladder as a car skids by. Making sure noone followed me I pull the manhole cover in it's place and jump down into the grimy sewage. "Cordy, you better be somewhere at the end of this tunnel." I'm not serious, it's just the tunnels under L.A. have become notoriously unclean. There used to not be chemically altered water knee deep in these tunnels. There used to be clean tunnels that you could easily navigate and now, sewage.
I wade through the knee-deep water content that I left my leather trenchcoat back at the hotel. My cellphone rings which throws me off for a few seconds because I had no idea you could get reception down here. "They were'nt lying!" I say as I flip it open and hold it to my ear. "Fred?" I ask as I'm jumped from behind. My cell phone goes flying and falls into the water with a splash. "And that was a new cell phone." I say as I pull whatever is hanging over me off of me and throw it in front of me into the wall of the tunnel.
A vampire stands in full game-face ready to fight me. Fine, he dresses up for his party. My face contorts into a more vampiric visage. I dress up for mine. The vamp stops growling and stands straight up. "Oh, I thought you were a human." I stand straight up and revert to my human face.
"A human? On a cell phone in the tunnels?" He walks over to where my cell phone fell, picks it up and shakes out the water (because shaking out the water will really fix it.) He then walks over to me and hands me the cell phone! I just stand and stare at him in disbelief.
"Honest mistake." He says as he hands me my phone. "What I can't be nice to a fellow creature of the night?" He sighs and walks away from me satisfied at his less then good deed. He doesn't get away. I whip out my cross bow and say, "Hey!" He whips around understanding what's coming and I let the arrow go, right into the heart. No muss, no fuss. "Thanks." I say before returning my crossbow to my pants.
I attempt to check if my cell phone is still working and to my surprise I hear Fred's voice saying "Hello. Hello. Angel." To my disbelief I answer it and she sounds relieved. "Oh, good. I thought you were having a fight. Have you found any information on Cordy?" She asks me this and I remember, that's why I came down here.
"Sorry, I crossed paths with an...upstanding vampire." She pauses and I know she's making a face. "It's okay. The artifact should be down the tunnel and up a drainage system. I'm only going into a museum. And Fred? Stay careful." After I finished I pocketed my cell phone and continued down the tunnel towards the underground power station. An office with security guards and a switch board for the museum above.
Something was wrong. The securty guards were unconscious on the ground. I take out my crossbow, reloading it as I slowly move towards the scene. I don't see anyone so whoever was here must've come and gone. And as I turn around to the switch board I can see who was here. The board was fried and there were some burn marks on the guards. "Gwen." Is all I say before I return to the street and walk in the front doors of the museum.
She made it easy for me. No alarms, no guards. Now, I just have to get through her.
