"Snow"
1.
When Temari stood in the desert she could feel the ground stretching down for miles and miles underneath her feet. She could feel (or at least, imagined that she could) the core, pulsing and quivering beneath her, so hot and tense that it could burst at any moment. But she knew it wouldn’t.
When Temari stood in the desert she felt like her world was far too big. Like she could be swallowed up into the sky at any moment and no one would even notice. Like she wanted to be.
Sometimes the feeling was welcome. She wanted to hold onto it, keep it, run and fly with it. But sometimes she wanted her world to shrink, wanted there to be things to hold onto and to feel, a small space, something tangible and whole. In the desert she was never whole, she was scattered through the sand and wind, shards flying.
2.
Temari liked to visit Konoha in the winter. When the snow fell thick around the inn she was staying in, drifts growing as tall as her sometimes. She felt trapped in her room, knowing it was far too cold to go outside, knowing there was no where she could be but there, curled in bed, cup of sake-spiked tea clutched in her hand, watching it snow.
She loved it. Being trapped there, in the warm, cozy room made her feel undeniably whole. It made her world feel small, contained. It was something she could feel, something she could hold and taste.
Eventually (of course) she would tire of it, long for the desert again, winds harsh and strong and scattering bits of her along with them. There was beauty in the desert, beauty and poetry. And in the inn, fire smoldering brilliantly and taste of alcohol sharp and real in her mouth, there was something completely different there.
And for now, she was there. Just her, whole and full, no pieces scattered, no beauty. Her, surrounded by snow and a dying fire.
