It was the first time she had seen him smile. Really smile, as if it was the sun breaking over his pale features. She had seen him smirk, seen him laugh humourlessly. But this time his eyes shone and he laughed, full and long. She wanted to ask him what it was, ask him what brought the warmth, soft and sudden into his face.
But then she thought that the smile would fade, that his brow would crease and his answer would be cryptic and cruel.
So she said nothing, just touched his arm lightly and smiled back to him, "It's a beautiful day." She said gently, with no idea of what his reaction would be.
"One of the last." He murmured. His smile faded, clouds breaking out over his face
"We can enjoy it then, can't we?" She clasped his hand, laying back on the springy grass and shutting her eyes against the sun's harsh rays. He lay next to her.
"Yes."
