There's gonna be some changes 'round here...

So: Barak Berkowitz of Six Apart has made a statement regarding the LJ deletions, and some, probably most, of the deleted journals are being reinstated. (You can find a more comprehensive list of deleted journals here; those that no longer have strikethroughs in their name are no longer deleted, obviously. I'd like to point out here that, ( Read more... )

I haven't finished reading this since I have to go to work, but for the record, I used to have "pedophilia" as an interest and I am obviously not a child rapist...what's wrong with being interested in the mindset of pedophiles and wishing to understand why there are pedophiles in our society? It is an interesting topic to debate and probably at least 99% of accounts with that as an interest are in no way advocating pedophilia. If you list "serial killers" as an interest, does that make you a serial killer?

I bet 95% of anthropologists accounts are suspended for some asshole reason like that. They're being unbelievably ignorant.

OH SHIT. I apparently have "inuit child abuse" listed in my interests. MUST HIDE FROM THE LJ FBI.

This is just more collateral damage to this pooch-screwing, shark-jumping episode that had resulted in a lot of lost trust among the LJ people. Barak did a whole buncha things wrong and it should come as no surprise that the LJ-sphere is quite pissed off. And to make things worse he's makeing pretty crappy excuses. Ig Brad Fitzpatrick were still running things, he would have told the so-called warriors to -- politely -- take a hike.

I am not surprised with your decision as I feel that it is a good one. For me though, this is only strike two against 6A's erosion of Brad's vision. Now that I have a permanent account, I am wondering if it was worth the investment.

Exactly! This is a huge part of what pisses me off. It's not just the mass deletion in and of itself. I've tried to accept LJ under 6A's leadership as opposed to Brad's, but they keep making decisions I find at least objectionable, and at most unconscionable. I was mad when they started introducing Plus Accounts, sponsored communities, and other forms of advertising onto LJ, but I've stuck with it. I seriously considered leaving when they banned icons that had-- oh noes!-- nipples in them and/or portrayed breastfeeding, but I stuck around. But this? This, I'm not going to get over.

I totally hear you on the compartmentalization. Now that I've gotten myself into library school, I feel like I should have more of a web presence that doesn't involve has less inane drivel and fangirl squeeing.

Have you figured out what you're going to use to run that there blog? I've been doing some investigating of CMSes and I can point you in a direction (don't know if it will be the right one) if you're still looking at your options.

You know, Susannah said the same thing. She said that, as she was transitioning into her professional career (and possibly teaching at the college level), she should make sure her online presence is as non-incriminating as possible. I suppose that, given that I'm about to do the same, compartmentalization is a good professional strategy, as well.

(Fortunately, since it's one of my academic interests, I don't have to forego fangirl squeeing in order to do so. Haha.)

The plan is to use a Wordpress blog, since all the blogs on my friend Chris' domain are run by Wordpress. Why? What suggestions do you have?
