I tried to explain Merlin to my mom because I was flailing a little at dinner about House and then mentioned how I was super-excited about Merlin in June. (omg NBC i love you!). So she asked me what it was about (again) and I explained about how it was loosely based on legend, except not really because all the characters ages and relationships have ( Read more... )

She usually at least humors my mad ramblings. Like how I will flail over something or other that happened on House, which she only half-watches. I wasn't expecting her to say that it sounded down-right lame.

Well considering its treatment of the source material I'm not surprised by her reaction. Especially when you describe in in that way it SOUNDS silly.

Aww, sometimes family are like that; my brother totally laughed at me for watching Merlin over the Xmas holidays. Luckily we have fandom to squee with :-)

Haha luckily my siblings don't laugh at me. Both my brother and sister love anime and the like as much as I do. My parents though..

And this is why I <33 fandom so much!

Carin again: I. LOVE. MERLIN. I watched it when it first came out a hojillion years ago and recorded it (yes, with a VCR and everything)then proceeded to watch it until the tape started wearing out. I adored the whole thing. It's coming out again in June?!

Haaaai Carin! <3

Are you talking about the Merlin mini-series with Sam Neill? (Because I totally LOVE THAT ONE TOO) The version I'm flailing about was aired at the end of last year on BBC so it hasn't been shown here yet. ^^;; (And yes you should totally watch it in June!)

Ahhhhh you have reminded me that I need to find a copy of that other version.

I mean, we aren't supposed to like the same things as people in their 50s. Wouldn't that be weird and not the other way around?

Mm.. good point I suppose. Although my general experience with the Merlin fandom is that the age range for people totally in love with the show is larger than you might otherwise expect. It IS a family-style show. *shrug*

I suspect it has more to do with me being disappointed that my parents generally dislike a lot of the things I am passionate about. ^^;

This gives you space to be your own person, if you want to really frusturate your parents the key is not to tell them what you are doing. So you can always say, yah just watching TV, and never specify what.

I would totally do that.. except lately everytime I am looking even remotely happy at my laptop screen, my mom goes all "what are you always laughing about on your computer". And I just look at her in confusion every time.
