Pre-Milliways: The deed is everything, the glory naught

Small fish in a huge pond.

That's how Martha feels every time she steps outside of her office near Capitol Hill. It's only been six months, if that, she's been away from Smallville, but the differences between her adopted town and the Beltway are substantial. Money, favors, and secrets still run the country's capitol.

Still, she's found a way to fit in while she's representing Kansas by taking on small favors for higher placed senators who don't have time to do everything their constituents ask for. Speaking at a conference of lawyers in Oklamhoma City. Giving a lecture at Texas A&M about organic farming, the laws governing it, and governmental grants and subsidizing loans that small time farmers can apply for without owing the shirt off their back for it. Even cutting a ribbon in Baltimore for a new public library.

Its that last one she's coming back from now, heels clicking against the polished floor of her office building. She plans on sitting down, removing her shoes and getting some coffee once inside her office, and relaxing for an hour before logging in the hours of this latest trip and sending last week's completed itinerary to her accountant so miles and dollars can be calculated against her yearly salary. Martha is nothing if not honest. There's just one problem.

Her office has been exchanged for a bar.
