There are many things I don't tolerate and/or don't want to hear while I'm working at the coffee shop. i don't want to hear people quitting an hour before their shift (yup. That was last month.) i don't want to hear employees asking me what they should do about such and such when they have been working for me for the past two months and should know by now what the hell they're doing. I don't want to hear my boss bitching at me about something he's responsible for. I don't want to hear customers ordering one drink, and complaing when the drink they clearly ordered is not what they expected (i.e "caramel macchiato". Thank you starubucks. thank you (but I still love you barb and tara)).
I especially do not want to hear in a very frantic tone: "where the hell is Guy??" (guy being the owner.) I don't want to hear my manager frantically calling his cell phone over and over, and the baker yelling, "GO UPSTAIRS AND SEE IF HE'S IN THE APARTMENT."
At that point in time, I hear what no barista in a roasting shop wants to hear:
"the roaster's on fire."
I tore up the back stairs, pound on every door to Guy's apartment, determine he's not there, and tore downstairs. With no other option, I sprint around the corner, and down the main street of Saugatuck, determining that Guy went to the bank. I yelled at people in my way (mind you, it's the 4th of July weekend... wall to wall people), dodged people in wheel chairs, semi-politely pushed small children aside, and ran into him at the corner the next block down.
"Annie?? What..."
"ROASTER'S ON FIRE!!!!"
yes friends, although it could have caught on fire, it didn't. But we shut down for 30 minutes, the guys from Wally's across the street grabbed the ladder and buckets of water to throw down the chimney, and the volunteer fire fighters came by to double check everything. We had to bring in as many fans as we could find because the standing smoke was still pretty thick.
The first thing that we said when we got back in the shop?
"So, uh... should we finish the drinks that were already ordered?"
