What is one thing you have learned from your past?
Thinking hard, Claire ponders what she has learned most about her past. She entertains several ideas, dismissing each before finally settling on one she feels resonated most with her.
Be careful who you trust.
Her first betrayal was Thomas. The man who fathered her child. The pregnancy she’d wanted to terminate until he talked her into keeping the baby. Promises of ‘we could do this’ and ‘this will be the best thing ever’ convincing her to make the effort. So she had. And in the end, it had been too much for him. Something that he’d decided he didn’t really want. By that time, it was too late. Her pregnancy was too far along to change her mind. So, she’d decided on adoption. Only to have a psychic named Richard Malkin desperately try to persuade and scare her into raising the baby on her own. Despite his best efforts, Claire really didn’t want this child. Then suddenly, Mr. Malkin changed his mind, buying her a plane ticket to Los Angeles where a young couple wanted to adopt her child.
“It has to be this flight. It can't be any other.
They're already scheduled to meet you when you arrive. Flight eight-fifteen.
Flight eight-fifteen.”
His words still echoed in her head. Another betrayal. Though she hadn’t known it at the time. Not until the plane crashed, leaving her stranded on this island, forcing her to raise this child on her own. It had been Malkin’s plan all along she’d though to herself so many times. But there was nothing she could do about that now.
Being stranded on a deserted, mystical island had not only forced her to have the child she’d never wanted, but it had presented her with yet another opportunity to trust someone. This time her betrayal came in the form of Charlie Pace, a fellow survivor of the ill fated flight. Someone she’d bonded with, grown very close to and allowed herself to trust way more than she should have a stranger.
He’d lied. Hidden things from her. Things that she felt were threatening to her child. Baby Aaron had become everything to Claire. The love she felt for this tiny being was unlike anything she’d ever known and deep down she’d felt the guilt on more than one occasion for the decision she’d almost made. And when she’d pushed Charlie away for his dishonesty, he’d done something completely unforgivable. He’d taken her child and put him in danger.
Claire was sure she’d never be able to trust Charlie again.
That was when she started having flashbacks, restored memories of her missing time. The 2 weeks missing from her life when she’d been kidnapped by Ethan on the island. The amnesia had been frustrating when she’d returned, unsure what had happened or how she’d escaped and found her way back. But with Libby’s help she’d started tapping into her memories. When things started finding their way into her conscious mind, she sought out Danielle, determined to find the place she’d been held. The place from the flashbacks. Kate refused to allow her to go alone, so she’d accompanied her. All these memories proved to remind Claire of how Ethan had kept her drugged, convincing her that giving up her baby to them was the only option. And she was going to do it too, until a nameless young woman had taken her to safety, outside of the bunker they’d held her in, leaving her in the jungle, unconscious. That’s when Danielle found her, just as Ethan was about to get her again. She’d had to knock her out, but the French woman had carried Claire to the safety of her own camp.
She’d trusted Ethan’s words, his empty promises, only to be betrayed yet again.
It had become a subsequent theme in her young life. But she’d learned many lessons. And none of them would ever be forgotten.
