Wellygeddon!

Apr 22, 2012 19:54

Today was Wellygeddon! I closet cosplayed Masaru, poorly, and sis closet cosplayed Chika because I find cosplaying as siblings hilarious. Random bits from wandering around:
  • A stall selling Doctor Who merch had lifesize cardboard cutout Daleks. I really wanted one, so it could exterminate cardBieb.
  • Sis saw a pedobear cosplayer. Now her ambition is to cosplay pedobear and photobomb everyone. Oh no.
  • I am quite proud of myself for managing not to buy a $60 gunblade, a North High girls' uniform, or a Lightning costume.
  • A player in my only game at the moment was there :) We chatted a bit.
  • One Direction is playing Wellington tonight and on our way to and from lunch outside the con, we inadvertedly wandered past their hotel, and thus a crowd of fangirls. On our way to lunch they were screaming (Dad suggested I scream back, "ELENAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA") and on our way back they were singing. I was like, is this really my city?

We got there fifteen minutes in. :(

If you could be one of the characters you played in real life:
    Brian = Takato
    Dave = Kakashi
Vic = Ed, closely followed by Tamaki

Dave: By the way, we'd like to apologize for not being One Direction, who we hear is also here somewhere, but we've decided to make our own band called No Direction. Vic will do most of the singing and harmonies and play most of the instruments and I'll just stand in the back going YEAH!

Brian, on voice acting for games: ... Towards the end you do fighting efforts which is like [GRUNTS] ... and I almost throw up.
Dave: ... Okay, we've saved the best thing for last: death screams. ...
Vic: ... They want a short death sound, a long death sound, a medium death sound, and three of each ... Falling from three feet, falling from one foot, falling from twenty feet ... It's much more disjointed than an actual series.

A girl has a question and Vic does, "Welcome, host club member."

    Favorite anime to watch:
Dave: We don't really get time to watch them.
Vic = Speed Racer for shows he wasn't a part of, has started watching Wolf's Rain.
Brian: Durarara!! because it's drawn really well but the music is awesome.
Dave: Stuff that I watched when I was a kid but I didn't know it was an anime, it was just really cool ... Star Blazers, Gai King

    Most awkward convention moment:
    Vic: Probably right now.
Brian had to fake his way through a DRR panel
Dave had two girls propose to him and Crispin Freeman at Anime Expo in LA: "we'd love to, but Crispin and I are married."
Vic: We could probably devote an entire panel to awkward convention moments ... I very rarely tell this story so have mercy on me, it was a mistake and I feel really bad ... Anime Expo. I was judging the preliminary auditions for AEx Idol ... I told an auditioner, I'm seeing a trend here, it's amazing to me how these sweet little Japanese girls would come up and have these sweet little voices and then they sing-- and the girl says, I'm Korean, and I said, whatever.
    Crowd: OOOOOOOOOH.
Vic: I just meant regardless of nationality and the whole crowd did exactly what you did. ...
Dave: ... We just say what we're thinking and if it comes out wrong it ends up on Youtube in eleven seconds.

Meeting Japanese voice actors of their parts:
Vic talks about meeting Romy Park and the guy who plays Ikkaku in Bleach; "I really want to meet Mamoru Miyano who voiced Tamaki ... We did a lot of the same roles"
Dave would love to meet the guy who played Kakashi "but to be honest with you I don't even know his name, so if anyone does please let me know so I can find him"; somebody tells him and he asks if someone can write it down and bring it to him later
Brian: Vic and I have been in a couple of shows together over the years but we haven't actually met until this week.
Vic ran over to Aaron (? who played his little brother) at a con and hugged him

A girl asks what their favorite sounds to record is, suggesting fighting sounds; because of the Kiwi accent Vic mishears her as "fart"
Dave: ... We all at some point end up doing what we call the anime screen which is like HRRRRRRRRRRRNGH BANG!
Dave's actual favorite is the 'bubble' voice "like the long and short of the Gollum voice"; "not many people can do it"
Vic: We're going to have to dissect you now because Brian and I both want to find out how to do that.
Brian: I'm going to learn how to do that one because that sounds like MONEY.

Brian brought his mom! Mom asks for favorite character lines
Brian does Uchicha from Bleach calling someone ugly
Dave: Can I abstain because it's not my mom?

    Most challenging character to voice:
Vic = Brolly from DBZ "because he screams all the time, yells everything" ... "don't take Brolly to the library; he does not have an inside voice"
Dave = Kakashi "only because there's so much heat-- everything he does is in control; he is almost never out of control" ... "almost nothing is screamed, so it's really hard to get so much emotion across with very little projection"
Brian = a really high-voiced guy on Bobobobobobo

Dave is abstaining from any and all conversation about the Persona 4 anime but tells us that the anime was announced "with all the voice actors returning" without actually talking to the voice actors, "I myself am undecided on whether or not I'm going to do it"
Vic: I hope my guy's back! I played Junpei in Persona 3 and I loved it!
Brian: If Dave's not doing it I'll do it.

Girl asks Vic and (Dave? I can't see too well) to brofist

    Favorite vocal warmups:
Dave: That's really a sort of oddly great question ... the only thing I really need to do is sort of warm up my face in the morning ... red leather yellow leather ... and by the end of it you can actually make words.
Vic talks about how his voice is lower in the morning and if he's playing a higher voiced character he doesn't have that until 1 or 2 in the afternoon, sometimes auditions when he's not feeling well and his voice is different and then he gets the part and "they play back what you did at the audition that they liked and you're like, oh crap, my voice doesn't sound like that any more."
Brian: Depending on the role you can sometimes ask for a timeslot ... Twenty years ago my warmup was a 32oz Diet Coke and a singalong to the radio on the way to the studio.

The boys start talking about the donuts Dave's eating

Vic and Brian love getting to sing in anime.
Dave prefers the talking "largely because I can't really sing", talks about the froggy song from Naruto, "you have these moments of realization where you realize, I really can't do this, can I? I am a horrible singer. I'll stick to talking."

A Winry cosplayer asks for Ed dialogue and gets "you know, Winry, I don't really fall for girls much but you're really hot! when I'm done finding the Philosopher's Stone, we should hook up!" and Vic tells her she makes a great Winry
Dave: You know that question about awkward convention moments? Write that one down ... It was awkward for ME.

    Weirdest fan request:
Vic: Mine's all over Youtube. A fan begged me, crying, to allow her to lick my hand ... This girl literally comes to conventions and advertises herself as the person who licked my hand.
Dave had someone at a con try to hook up his single mom with him
Brian: Believe it or not I have not had one, but the good and scary news is I'm still here for two more hours today, so take your best shot ... A fan gave me an envelope once with a lock of their hair in it. I don't know if they wanted me to clone them?

Someone asks for a team attack of Pepper Breath and two attacks I didn't recognize.
Dave: That's our warmup for No Direction.

Vic's favorite quote from Ouran, he doesn't have one but he's often asked for "what if I let you drink it ... from my mouth" (on commoners' coffee) "and the poor little girl says THEN I WOULD DRINK IT and I actually like the little girl's response more than Tamaki's line"

Vic asked about Saiyuki Reload: he would have loved to do his role again

Vic asked whether he prefers Brotherhood or the original but he doesn't really separate them and just got really excited about Brotherhood: "Oh my gosh, Ed's getting to go to new cities! Ed's getting to meet new characters! ED'S GETTING TO WEAR NEW CLOTHES!"

Best written series in their opinions:
Dave = Lilo and Stitch the anime, Reuben who knows what's going on
Brian: Digimon Tamers with Takato and Guilmon ... It wasn't just fight fight fight all the time, you really got to know the characters ...
Vic = FMA, something he's still working on so he can't talk about it publicly yet

Vic asked to sing Tamaki's theme from Ouran; sound guy gives him some reverb. "One Direction who?"
Dave: Ladies and gentlemen, the lead singer and all of the other singers of No Direction!
Vic: What are some of their hits?
Dave: I don't really want to know.
Vic: You're the one who brought them up!
Dave: I only brought it up to make fun of them because I think the whole concept is insane.

    What are they fans of?
Vic: That's easy: Star Trek. Original series.
Dave: These donuts are pretty good ... Psych ... Reaper. They cancelled that after thirteen episodes and it made me really upset.
Brian: I probably shouldn't admit this as an actor but I am a huge fan of reality shows.
Dave and Vic start leaving in response.
Brian: This just became a reality show! [he wants some kind of crossover between a cooking show, Survivor, and The Amazing Race] But I also like Family Guy! ... Star Wars the original trilogy, BSG

Someone with a very resonant baritone asks how to get into the industry.
Dave: I have no idea ... You have to live where it's being done ... New York or something like that, and they're very expensive places to live so I wouldn't just pull up and move to the States.
Vic compliments the guy's voice and suggests voice overing: Get yourself hooked up with a talent agency.
Dave: The only way to get yourself hooked up with an agent is to make yourself a demo ... They're going to want not character demos but commercial.
Vic: And don't put anything on a demo that you wouldn't want to have to do for six hours.

Someone asks Vic to do Zero lines.

I bought a bubble gun, a boxed set of Pokemon Orange Islands era, collector's edition Final Fantasy XIII-2 (actually I'm kicking myself about this one because it was cheaper online), a sonic screwdriver LED torch, a Stargate comic about Vala, a few art prints, and also got a free Avengers comic. Got the Avengers comic autographed by Carlo Pagulayan, who is lovely and Filipino and we had one of those conversations where the other person speaks Tagalog and I answer in English about how long I've been here and how much Tagalog I still speak. Also got my goggles and Digimon: Data Squad DVDs autographed by Brian Beacock and Dave Wittenberg :D

Dave was impressed that I had a fabric pen for my goggles. "You came prepared!" And he didn't recall playing Takuya in the movie because he plays so many roles.

"Can I have a photo punching you?" "I have never been asked that one before." "It's your new awkward con moment."

I gushed at Brian about how Tamers is my favorite too ;; I had him sign our Data Squad US release collection 1 boxed set and he said, "That's cool; I've never actually seen this one before!"

His shirt, as he told us in line, is by a New Zealand designer who was selling shirts at this con. Alas, I forgot to get the name.

    First episode, man.
