this morning at the hospital I burnt a wheat pack in the microwave

(I was subbing in at the cancer day ward for a bit and no one told me you had to put in a cup of water okay)

Today had ridiculous weather even for Wellington: Thunder storm, a sudden heavy hail onslaught, rain, then a beautiful sun shower. I feel like I'm being trolled. But at least it got the news off the rugby for a day; these past couple of months it's been all WEATHER WEATHER WEATHER (the snow storm) then RUGBY RUGBY RUGBY (thanks, World Cup) and now it's back to weather.

The dress rehearsal for Tartuffe was tonight and wow was it amazing seeing what everyone's done with it. Some fantastic physical comedy from one group to the point that one girl didn't even have lines and I just kept loling at her; next group triple cast two of their characters and had them all onstage at once in an effort to get more people onstage and it worked; another group double cast two roles and got them on beautifully and one of my friends did a phenomenal job as the creepiest SOB in a scene of creepery. It was awesome. Can't wait to see that last again tomorrow. Meanwhile, I went on a mission for police hats, and, unable to find three of the same one for a reasonable price, grabbed little hat fascinators instead and stuck on white squares to make that checkered line you see on police uniforms, and everyone thought I'd made them. Whoops.

As awesome as the performances were, I kind of hate sometimes how the 200 level theater acting pool isn't very diverse. Because when you've got the one Maori guy and the one legally deaf (I think) girl playing an inhuman character everyone else in the play calls a monster and is thought to be Shakespeare's interest in the other, and a Filipina playing a maid to a white woman in the next... I know it's the acting pool. I know the directors weren't even thinking about that. All three actors did fantastic jobs with it. But damnit, directors, these castings have unfortunate implications, which I'm pretty sure my fellow theater students think I'm too PC to consider (eg. the Maori guy seemed surprised by the idea when I asked the director if he'd been intentionally cast there).

Sort of related: Post discussing that interview where that white model whose eyes were taped in Vogue Japan claimed she wasn't thinking about race at all.
