(no subject)
When my parents went to university in the Philippines, Spanish was mandatory. Dad retained it far better than Mom. This is quite helpful for me.
Mom has also done a few French classes. I did about three weeks of French in primary school and have had way too much exposure to the language thanks to my French-speaking/class-taking friends. Raeann is now doing French classes in primary school.
And we all speak English, clearly, and at least attempt Tagalog (I understand it but cannot speak it; Raeann can say stuff but doesn't understand it).
So we get conversations like this at the dinner table (apologies for my rubbish attempts at making up other languages' spelling and grammar):
Dad: "Almorzar 'yan ding sa Caryl ngayon."
Raeann: "What?"
Dad: [walks her through it]
Me: "I love this, learning three languages at the dinner table."
Raeann: "Yeah, well, I do French!"
Me: "Oh! Je parlais Francais, un peu."
Raeann: "...okay I'm not that far yet. Je m'appelle Raeann! Et toi?"
Me: "Je m'appelle Caryl."
Mom: "No! You should say 'et vous' - 'and you?'"
Me: "She did: Et toi. You're being overly polite. You're using usted."
(Yeah, I know there wasn't actually Spanish in this conversation, but I got a kick out of being able to related vous to usted.)
