Author's Notes: slightly later than the challenge's due date, but I just stumbled on this community recently . . .
Wow, was all Lorelai could think when she saw what was in the kitchen.
Without thinking, she reached for candies, her hands unwrapped them and jammed them into her mouth; then she went at the cake; her mother found her covered in incriminating chocolate and started ranting.
The pool party was supposed to live up to appearances; there was apparently no antidote to the shame and loathing Emily Gilmore felt towards her seven-year-old daughter. She locked Lorelai in her room for the first time; for the first time Lorelai learned to climb on the roof to freedom, what would become her classic jailbreak strategy. As she grinned at the stars, she whispered, “Dude, dude, dude,” her mother's new least favorite word, and began to feel vindicated.
This struggle for vindication would become the defining factor of her life.
