So. I hold Janis Joplin way high up in my mind. I love everything about her - I read about her, listen to an album practically every other day OR every day. I really feel her, even though it was nearly 40 years ago. So, I'm reading some kind of forum just now, just out of curiosity, and there's these people just bashing her. All of them my generation or not much older than I, it seems. And their comments seem to be oblivious to any real feeling - like, all they can say is how she didn't have a good voice and how she didn't sing the blues 'right'. or whatever. but, you know, she never said she was the fucking queen or anything... she actually was very modest. she was just a port arthur girl who wanted to live her life and be free. she wasn't living in any mansion, nothin like that. i mean, she had a porshe later on, but she had a roadie paint all over it! and it became a work of art, not a flashy car. and, hey, she didn't think she could sing either. she didn't! it's in writing, in her letters. She never compared herself to Aretha franklin or any one! She was just having fun, and she was trying to express herself, and she felt it. She felt it, and you can see it and hear it and feel it with her. .. The question here is... What has happened to us? Why are we so mean?
I feel like there are so many people who just carry around a smile all day, you know, and then they do things that are just so... mean! I mean, we're humans, right? and you know, that gives us the right - the utility - of compassion, sympathy, whatever -- it makes it so we can put ourselves in other people's shoes. but. we so sedomly actually do that, man. makes me sad. no. makes me disappointed. but, i mean, a good bunch of the youth of the 60s showed that americans DO have hearts, and they don't have to tie themselves to this bullshit religion to prove it. that's another thing. the church. full of heartless bastards, but the image is carried by the very few who actually do good in the church's namesake. and when i say very few - i mean VERY few. man. it's all wrong. this is all wrong. it's all ass-backwards. makes me want to cry, man.
