I lost a third of the value of the mutual fund in my IRAs back in 2008, when I was 58. But I just held onto them, rather than panicking and selling, and they had time to recover by the time I signed up for Social Security at 69. Of course, if we were still in California we might be living under a bridge, given what housing prices are like there.

Good point on differences in the cost of living. When my folks retired, they sold their house in the Chicago suburbs and moved downstate, where they were able to buy more house for the same amount of money, maybe even less.

We are paying about two-thirds the rent our former apartment in Riverside is now charging and getting about 50% more apartment.

I have seen two or three references to it on the UK news sites and can't make head nor tail of it. But having seen so many pension schemes fail I am glad to have worked all my life for the NHS, so my pension is government backed, rather than relying on investment fund managers.
