Idiot Plot

I've been known to write annoying people into my sf and fantasy (the more clearly different from the Primary World, the better) and then redshirt them or otherwise bring them low. However, I can't do that with the mess I'm currently in because, written as fiction, it would look like an idiot plot.

One of the classic examples of an idiot plot is a situation in which Character A hears something bad about Character B, and immediately takes offense and starts giving Character B the silent treatment without even checking the veracity of the information or the source. The whole story is spent resolving a problem that could've been avoided if Character A had just talked to Character B instead of immediately giving them the cut on the basis of second-hand information.

And that's the sort of problem I'm dealing with right now. Other than as farce, I don't know how to write the situation as even remotely plausible fiction.
