A disturbing study in the UK has shown that
large numbers of people have no qualms about finding ways to cheat the system and make off with a few items in the process. Many of these people justify their actions by saying that they're effectively being charged to do work.
Interestingly enough, it looks like the problem of "external shrinkage," as management likes to call the problem of theft at self-checkout, is doing much more to remove self-checkout stations than all the protests about lost jobs. It's only when it hits their bottom line that they are going to become concerned.
