I found out almost by accident, from a comment on Facebook -- and went immediately to several news websites to verify that this was in fact true: the CEO of UnitedHealthCare had been murdered in cold blood on the streets of New York, in a manner that made it clear that it was a premeditated assassination, not an act of random street violence.
I'm old enough that I can remember reading news stories about the terrorist acts of the Red Army Brigade and other terrorist organizations in western Europe in the 1970's and early 1980's. The kidnapping and murder of Olaf Palme got the most news coverage, but I heard of several other actions, simply because I was reading newspapers and news magazines when I was a tween and early teen.
This feels very much like what I remember reading of what was going on in Europe in those days. I sincerely hope that this is not the beginning of a new cycle of that sort of violence.
But it's very frightening that the NYPD and the FBI have so little to go on in their manhunt for this person.
(NB: I have a health insurance policy from UnitedHealthCare -- but I would have been appalled even if I had no personal connection with the company.)
