Yikes!

There's a reason a lot of people are uneasy about relying too much on "the cloud" for their data. Sure, it's convenient -- but how much should you trust other people with your most critical data? What protections do they have in place to make sure that a malicious act, or even a dumb mistake, doesn't destroy not only your data, but all their backups of it as well?

This happened to an Australian pension fund management company earlier this month, when Google accidentally deleted their entire account, including backups, irrevokably. By the time the error was discovered, there was nothing Google could do to recover the data.

Fortunately, the company had been just paranoid enough to have backups with another cloud backup company, and were able to restore. However, that process cost them over a week of downtime -- which is going to hurt their bottom line.

As Andy Grove was wont to say, "Only the paranoid survive."

What recourse do YOU have if something were to happen to your data on the cloud?
